Board Elections: Expectations and Process

Now accepting applications for the 2013 Board of Directors.

The deadline for application is January 18, 2013! 

Each year, the Guild holds elections for new board members, who serve for two years. We seek qualified members who are dedicated to advancing the craft of green building in Boulder County and passionate about leading this organization to the next level.  Online Application (must log in as a member to access the application)

We are particularly interested in having members with any of following skill set/expertise run in 2013:

 

  • Finance
  • Fundraising
  • Marketing
  • Organizational/Business Development
  • Legal
  • Educational

As a trade organization, balanced industry-sector participation is an important way we address our members’ needs. The Guild strives to have the following backgrounds represented on the board of directors:

Building Science

New Home Construction

Landscaping

Architecture

Non-Profit Experience

Home Remodeling

Interior Design

Local Government/Policy

Commercial Remodeling

Marketing

Real Estate/Developer

Business Management/Finance Experience/Access to Fundin


Important questions to ask yourself when deciding if this opportunity is right for you:

 

  • Are you really excited and passionate about the Guild's mission?

  • Are you motivated to be directly involved with growing the organization and identifying and pursuing ways in which to implement our mission?

  • Are you interested in thinking strategically about the organization’s future?

  • Are you a team player?

  • Do you have specific skills or partnership and leveraging connections that you would bring to the position? (Skills that are particularly beneficial include: financial management, strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, and non-profit development experience.)

  • Are you willing to spend the time it requires to be a fully participating board member (see Expectations outlined below.)

  • Are you up for having fun doing it?

Expectations for Guild Board Members:

  • 2-year term beginning in February

  • 80 percent attendance at monthly board meeting (4th Tuesday the month, 5:15 to 7:15pm)

  • Attendance at 2 full day retreats (one in early March on a Saturday)

  • Attendance at the first Board meeting in February which will be 4:15 to 7:15 to support a transition from old members to new.

  • Participation on at least one Guild board committee that meets as part of the board meeting but may meet separately on an as needed basis

  • Willingness to follow through on committee activities

  • Willingness to participate in annual membership drive campaigns
  • Ensure committee work is in line with and supportive of the Guild mission

  • Report committee updates during board meetings

  • Attend at least 4 brownbag events a year

  • Attend the Annual Board Meeting and the Board Retreat

  • Commitment to secure $1,500 annually in either sponsorship revenue or other approved organizational support

  • Willingness to be an officer for the board, including president, secretary, or treasure

Process for electing board member elections:

 

  • During November or December we will put out a call for applications

  • Send your bio and a completed application (see below)

  • Candidates are expected to attend the annual meeting held in late January to make a two-minute statement to our members about how their experience qualifies them for this position and what they think the priorities should be for the Guild in the coming two years.

  • Voting will take place via an online survey tool after the meeting

  • The results will be communicated during the first brownbag in February and board members are expected to attend the first board meeting in February as well as the annual board retreat in early March.

** Note the following 2013 Board meeting dates and you must commit to attending these meetings if you apply:

  1. Annual Member Meeting: Thursday, January 24th 5:30-8:30pm

  2. 1st Board meeting: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 3pm - 6pm (Note, this meeting is scheduled for 3 hours)

  3. 1st Retreat: Saturday, March 2nd, 2013 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

  4. 2nd Retreat: Saturday, October 12, 2013 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (This is subject to change and will be confirmed with the board.

  5. Monthly Board Meetings: 4th Tuesday of the month 5:15 - 7:15 pm; (When board meetings fall on a holiday they will be moved to the 3rd Thursday of the month)
