Overview

Achieving high performance building criteria like the German Passive House standard is difficult. Very few people in Colorado know how to achieve a 90% reduction in energy required to heat a home or building. This 4 part training series is intended to be a starting point for that journey.

Session 4: Mechanicals design, renewable systems and important installation considerations. High Performance Buildings can be a significant game changer for mechanical and renewable designs.

  • Don’t tell the HVAC manufacturers, but with a fantastic envelope, we can now significantly reduce the size of our mechanical systems offsetting a considerable portion of the incremental envelope costs.
  • Likewise, if you plan on net zero with renewables and create an excellent envelope, the size of renewables system can be greatly reduced while achieving similar results.
  • Finally, we will discuss the merits of various mechanical and renewable strategies. For example, does geothermal make sense and should we use solar PV or solar thermal or both?
