This lecture will be targeted towards professionals in the green building industry. High-performance homes can cut heating and cooling loads by 80%. We will demonstrate how to get there by tightening up the shell, using geothermal for HVAC and DHW, and an ERV with an earth tube for high-efficiency ventilation. The results are ultra-efficient, healthy, comfortable, and long-lasting homes without a hefty price tag. Due to their low electricity consumption, these homes can be operated truly at net-zero with affordable PV systems.

Speaker bios:

Hans Joachim Preiss is a net-zero building engineer in Boulder, where he is working to simplify net-zero to the point where it becomes affordable and mainstream. He previously held engineering positions at the boiler, water heater, and solar division of Bosch North America, and developed concepts for net-zero energy homes that were built in Canada, New England, and Georgia. Hans has a degree in Environmental Science from Munich Polytechnic in Germany.

Norbert Klebl is a petroleum engineer who is convinced that the era of dependence on fossil fuels is over. Insulating and tightening up buildings make it economical to switch from natural gas to PV-powered heating, cooling, and ventilation. Norbert has designed GEOS, an energy-plus community in Arvada, and equipped a dozen homes with ground source based heating and cooling systems in Boulder and surrounding towns. All these homes are fossil fuel free and several are powering an electric car.
